Typhoon Haiyan Hits Vietnam

The storm devastated the Philippines over the weekend.
MANILA, PHILIPPINES - A typhoon which is blamed on thousands of deaths made landfall in Vietnam as a category one storm.

Officials called Typhoon Haiyan as one of the most powerful storms ever when it hit the Philippines Friday. Thousands are feared dead across the island nation, but an accurate death toll is difficult because communications remain down in many areas.

President Obama issued a statement saying he was deeply saddened by the loss of life and the destruction. The Pentagon is sending Marines to assist in the recovery.

The Philippines became a U.S. territory after the Spanish-American War and was granted independence 1946.
