Should Medicare Cover Obesity Treatments?

Former HHS Secretary says it would save billions of dollars.

Ten years ago,  Medicare started paying for seniors prescriptions. Now a former Secretary of Health and Human Services is calling for the government to expand that program.

With one-third of Americans considered to be obese, Tommy Thompson is pushing for Medicare to cover obesity treatments such as medication and gastric bypass surgery. He says it would save millions of dollars in medical costs.

Thompson says Congress should pass the "Treat and Reduce Obesity Act " which would allow Medicare to cover obesity treatments.

The American Medical Association has classified obesity as a disease.
