Saving For College In Scary Times

With all the unease and money concerns many are worried how they'll pay for their children's education.
STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - With all the unease and money concerns many are worried how they'll pay for their children's education. Wednesday night at the State College Friends School parent's found a little security in the face of a lot of uncertainty.

Lori Pacchioli is a Development Director at the school. She’s also the parent of a 12 year old. So she listened to Charley Gelb from the State Treasury Office talk about a state plan for that involves putting money away a little at a time and locking in current college rates.

It’s called a 529 College Savings Plan. And the money you put in here can be used at just about any college or university in the country. And since you lock in the rates through the state, you can't get less than you put in.

Armen Kemanian is looking at the plan for his two girls. He’s planning on them going to college and he likes the structure of paying for the college a little at a time.

Paccioli feels more secure funding her child's education in a program run through the State, it gives her a sense of control when the financial market seems to be in upheaval.

The PA 529 website has more details and you can watching free online webinars about the plans.
