Punxsutawney Bridge Work

Bridge work causes traffic concerns for Jefferson County motorists.
With two large bridge construction projects underway in Punxsutawney, a number of Jefferson county motorists are dealing with some significant detours.

The work on State Route 36 is just one of a couple of bridge projects in the Punxsutawney area. They are a cause of some concerns for residents.  With both the Route 36 Bridge over Sawmill Run at West Mahoning Street, and the Route 119 Ridge Avenue - Elk Run Bridge currently closed and under construction, some big traffic changes have to be made.

While   construction crews are working some long hours to try and wrap up the bridge work as soon as possible, there are some local business people who say they have been missing some regular customers during the construction.

Both of the bridge rebuilding projects are on State Routes and under the control of Penn-DOT.  Municipal officials say the timing of the work was out of their hands and they understand that plenty of motorists are facing different traffic problems.  Plenty of people who live in the area say they have seen those traffic shifts and new areas of congestion. For others, the temporary detours are not a big problem.

Another concern of all of this bridge construction is how school buses will get kids to their classes once school resumes in the fall.   Plans are already being put in place for temporary bus routes.  Punxsutawney Borough officials say they hope to see the Route 119 Bridge reopen at the end of this month. The Route 36 bridge project is scheduled for completion sometime in October.
