PORTAGE, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- West Hills Regional Police charged George Lane with impersonating the Portage Police Chief. “A couple of nights ago officers contacted me and asked me if I contacted the victim,” said Ed Miller, Portage Police Chief. ‘I told them I had nothing to do with it.”
Lane was arrested Wednesday night for making phone calls to his estranged wife. Police said he contacted her at work pretending to be Miller. According to a criminal complaint Lane wrote a “tree fell on him and killed him.”
Miller said he only met the defendant once. “I checked our records and I had met him once on an incident last summer,” said Miller.
“Impersonating an officer is serious,” said Andrew Havas, West Hills Regional Police Chief. “He identified himself as someone he is not.”
Strangely, Miller said this was not the first time this has happened to him. “I’ve learned not to be surprised by anything people do,” said Miller.
Lane is in jail on $50,000 bond.
