Penn State President Search Narrowed Down

The search for the next Penn State president is close to being over.
PENN STATE, UNIVERSITY PARK - The search for the next Penn State president is close to being over.

University officials say a new president could be named as soon as next month.

The presidential search committee has been working for months to find candidates for the 18th president of Penn State.

Officials say nearly 400 individuals were originally contacted about the position, but will not release how many candidates they currently have.

Vice President of Administration, Tom Poole, says the Board of Trustees hopes to have a finalist for the position present at their November board meeting.

University Spokesperson, Jill Shockey, released a statement Thursday, saying, "The presidential search is a confidential process and there is no public presentation or posting of a short list of potential candidates...It is a protective measure for the candidates themselves who request confidentiality to protect and preserve their current careers."

As for the start date for the next president, university officials say that is negotiable, depending on the candidate's current job, etc.

President Erickson is under contract until June 2014, but if the next president can start before then, Erickson may step down early to help with the transition process.
