Pair of Nittany Lions Honored

Hackenberg and Ficken honored by Big Ten
UNIVERSITY PARK, CENTRE COUNTY - A pair of Penn State players have earned conference player of the week honors for their role in the Nittany Lions' 23-17 win against Syracuse in the season-opener.

Christian Hackenberg, starting at quarterback in his first game at Penn State, has earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Hackenberg threw for 278 yards - the third-highest total ever by a Nittany Lion freshman - 2 TD and 2 INT. The Fork Union Military Academy product's highlight of the game was a 54-yard touchdown toss to redshirt-freshman receiver Geno Lewis.

Penn State placekicker Sam Ficken has earned Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week, his second in a row (vs. Wisc in 2012's final week). Ficken converted all three field goals he attempted against Syracuse, including a career-long 46-yard kick. The junior has now converted 13 straight field goals.

Penn State next plays Eastern Michigan on Saturday. It's the home opener for the Nittany Lions.
