ALLEGHENY TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY - The first of this year's Central P-A Green recycling events got underway on Wednesday. This year, the effort has been expanded to include more than shredding documents and other personal papers.

There was plenty of traffic around the recycling event in the parking lot of Wolf's Furniture off of Plank Road in Allegheny Township near Altoona.

People were lined up well before the collection was scheduled to start at 10 in the morning.   WTAJ is partnering with Wolf Furniture and Burgmeier's Shredding and Recycling in the environmental protection effort.

In  addition to the usual document and paper  shredding that are always popular with the public,  this year the event included the collection of  all sorts of e-waste, or out of date, unused and broken electronics.

By mid afternoon a small mountain of discarded home electronics has been collected for recycling.  The people who were lined up  to drop off sensitive paperwork for shredding or e-waste for recycling said  this was a valuable service and one  that they really appreciated.

Workers were on hand throughout the day to help unload the materials for shredding or to be recycled.  The event seemed to be going smoothly despite the overwhelming participation and some afternoon thunderstorms that rolled though the region.

Organizers said they expected to collect about 20 tons of paper for shredding during the day long events and about three tractor trailer loads of electronics by the time the day long collection ended at 7 p.m.

Both organizers and people who were dropping things off said is they welcomed the opportunity to get rid of confidential documents and out of date electronics in an environmentally sensitive fashion.
