TYRONE, BLAIR COUNTY - A Blair County based manufacturing company says it is out of space.  Now Gardeners Candies has taken a big step toward expanding its facilities.

The people behind the candy company say their business is good these days.  It is so good they need to come up with more space for their manufacturing and shipping operations.

A group of company and business leaders gathered outside of the Gardners candy plant in the Tyrone Industrial plant for a ground breaking to mark the official start of the major expansion effort.

By late fall, a 12,000 square foot addition will add   needed work space onto the existing candy manufacturing and shipping plant. Twelve years after his firm bought Gardners candies, Bill Sarris says it time to expand the operation.

In addition to its candy manufacturing facility in Northern Blair County, the company maintains a network of fourteen retail stores in Pennsylvania and Maryland and the company's distribution system keeps growing based on the reputation of their products.

Company officials say their growth can be traced to efforts of the current work force. They expect the number of employees in all operations of the company will increase once the new manufacturing and shipping space is available. Company officials say the timing on adding to the workforce in Tyrone will depend on how soon they are in the new addition and able to expand their operations.  They hope to have the project completed in late November of this year.
