Man Surrenders to Police After Picture Appears on Facebook

The police department has seen considerable success using social media.
ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY – A 24-year-old Hollidaysburg man turned himself in to police Thursday morning less than 12 hours after the department displayed his picture on their Facebook page.

Philip James Medairy was wanted on heroin charges when Altoona Police posted his picture on the department’s Facebook page late Wednesday night. His image was shared more than 250 times in less than 12 hours, and he turned himself in around 10 a.m. Thursday.

The Altoona Police Department Facebook page was recently ranked number two in the nation, leading to more than 100 arrests in the last year. Its success has encouraged the creation of a Facebook page for Southern Blair County Law Enforcement.
