Man Steals Kettle From Disabled Volunteer

Richland Township Police charged James Smith Jr., with stealing a Salvation Army Kettle on Christmas Eve.

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- Richland Township Police charged James Smith Jr., with stealing a Salvation Army Kettle on Christmas Eve.

Police said Smith stole the kettle from a disabled volunteer at the Galleria Mall in Richland Township.

“He distracted the volunteer and when she went to give him her bus schedule he took the kettle and ran,” said Officer Steve Beblar.

But police said Smith didn’t get very far.

“We tracked him down at the bus stop outside the mall,” said Beblar.  ‘He had the kettle in his bag.”

Police said Smith tried to deny that he took the kettle but later gave them a signed confession.

‘He told us he took it because he just got out of jail and had no money,” said Beblar.

There was just under $160 in the kettle police said due to the amount and nature of the incident Smith will be charged with a misdemeanor offense.  He is not currently in jail.
