Lunar Eclipse Friday Night

Lunar Eclipse Friday Night

If the clouds break, a penumbral lunar eclipse will be visible in our area.
This is not the kind of eclipse that you would notice if you weren't looking for it. A penumbral lunar eclipse is not a case when the moon passes into the full shadow of the Earth and disappears. All solid objects, including the Earth cast two shadows. The umbra is a dark inner shadow surrounded by a lighter shadow which is called the penumbra. In the cast of this Friday night, the moon is going to be passing through the lighter shadow. So what will you see? Shortly after moonrise (which is shortly after 7:30pm) the southermost part of the moon will darken a little.

Do you want help to observe this event? The Starlight Astronomy Club will have a public sky watch at Canoe Creek State Park. from 6pm until 9pm.

If you miss this eclipse, there will be a much better show on April 14th into the 15th of next year when there will be a full dark total eclipse of the moon.
