Local Researchers Help You Fight the Flu

Study looking for people with flu symptoms to try medication.

If you're showing signs of flu such as  a headache, fever, aches, and sore throat, you may be able to get help in fending off the illness. Blair Medical Associates in Altoona, is conducting a study of flu medication to see how the current treatment compares with a potential new therapy.

Researchers there are looking for people who've been experiencing flu symptoms for less than 48 hours, haven't had a flu shot, and have a fever of at least 100.4. Patients accepted into the study will receive Tamiflu, another potential flu medicine called Nitazoxanide, a combination of the two, or a placebo.

Research Site Manager Julia Benton says preliminary results are encouraging. "We've had study participants that we contacted within the first five days and they felt good within the first 24 to 48 hours," she says.

Benton says the new drug is already approved to treat another illness and it's considered safe.
