Jim Maher spent over a year at Ground Zero, recovering personal effects for families whose loved ones were killed in the attacks. On today's show, he shares his experience in his own words.

Jim is 42 years old. He was born and raised in Altoona and later started working for a company out of Texas that recovered personal effects from plane crashes. He was the closest person in his company to New York City on September 11th, 2001. So, his company sent him to Ground Zero, immediately.  Jim describes what he saw when he arrived, his recovery experience and the after effects on his health. He says he is now suffering from several serious medical conditions, including COPD.

Watch this story to see never before shown photographs from Jim's personal collection.

We also got to learn the story of Garrett Barbosa who was a New York city Firefighter on that fateful September day. Garrett is now living in Bellwood and WTAJ news reporter Jim Madalinsky caught up with him to hear his story.
