Local Company Wins National Award

The National Association of State Land Reclamation honored P & N Coal Inc. of Punxsutawney.
PUNXSUTAWNEY, JEFFERSON COUNTY - The EPA recently passed new regulations to limit the CO2 emission from manufacturing coal, but some companies say the changes are too expensive and are forcing the offices to close.

By April 2015, the Shawville Plant in Clearfield County will close leaving 80 people without jobs and affecting about 1,000 other jobs.

P & N Coal Inc. in Punxsutawney says they could be affected.

"When we have lost the market for coal in this area that means there will be less projects of this type under taken" said P & N president John Prushnok.

Prushnok's company focuses on mine land reclamation.

"After the environmental impact assessment has been completed we then, re-mine the property if you will; replace it back to its original contour and revegetate the land" he said.

He and the company recently won an award from the National Association of State Reclamation.

"It's a testament if you will to what environmental successes can be gained when private industry and regulatory agencies put their heads together" he said.

They have already reclamated 40 acres of land in Sandy Township and are expanding the project. It is now State Game Lands.
