Lawsuit Over Demolition Cost

A local city and county are fighting over thousands of dollars and the demolition of a building.
ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - A local city and county are fighting over thousands of dollars and the demolition of a building.

The Altoona City Council voted unanimously to sue Blair County over the $95 thousand dollars in delinquent real estate taxes that the county is keeping to pay part of the cost of the Russo building demolition.

The building was set on fire several times, before it was finally torn down. The county bought this property and it cost about a $133 thousand to demolish.

The city says legal statutes say the county has to pay that bill. But Blair County Commissioners see the demolition site differently.

They don’t think the rest of the county should have to pay for Altoona blight. They think they have the legal right to keep some of that money to pay the bill.

Commissioner Terry Tomassetti says nothing like this has happened before while he's been a County Commissioner.

Neither side is backing down, and both sides are willing to go to court to see who should pay the bill.
