Lady Lions' Youth Movement

PSU women's basketball roster features seven true freshmen.
UNIVERSITY PARK, CENTRE COUNTY - If numbers never lie, then the story of this year's Lady Lions team is youth.

Seven true freshmen are part of the Penn State women’s basketball squad, and so far what they've brought to the court is energy.

“These girls get after it,” senior guard Maggie Lucas says of the first year players. “They come in here and they get loud. They push themselves really, really hard. Probably the hardest working group of freshmen I've been around.”

There's no question Lucas - the reigning Big Ten player of the year - is the leader of this team.
The Lady Lions say the bunch has taken on her personality.
As for who will complement Lucas’s scoring prowess, it's a consensus group effort.

“Night in and night out, you're not gonna know who can go off for 20, for 15, you know, a big game on you,” senior point guard Dara Taylor says. “I think that's definitely one of our strengths this year.”

But it may take some time for the Lady Lions to grow into their roles, too.
That's the challenge of bringing seven true freshmen into the college game.

“We're still figuring out who's gonna do what,” head coach Coquese Washington says. “And now we just gotta figure out as we get into games and as we get into scrimmages and that kind of thing, who's gonna show up when the lights turn on.”

The spotlight will shine bright when the games start for real on Nov. 8.
The Lady Lions host St. Francis that night.
