Lady Lions to Host Top-Ranked Connecticut

Penn State women's basketball prepares to host defending national champions.
UNIVERSITY PARK, CENTRE COUNTY - It's a whale of a match up for the 13th-ranked Lady Lions.
In just the third game of the regular season, No. 1 UConn, the defending national champions, are coming to town.

“The thing about a team like Connecticut is they take advantage of your mistakes,” head coach Coquese Washington says. “And they don't make very many mistakes at all.”

So where do you start when it comes to attacking the nation's best team?
Washington believes preparation for her young squad must start with focusing on internal improvements as opposed to gunning for the Huskies.

“It's about us getting better,” Washingon says. “And it doesn't matter if we were playing my son's YMCA team, we're preparing the same way. We're preparing for us to get better.”

That might actually be easier to do with such a young team.
A half-dozen freshmen are essentially blank slates learning to play with each other as much as worrying about a specific opponent.

“We're still new,” first-year forward Peyton Whitted says. “We're still trying to gather our chemistry. We just want to focus on us. I mean if it's going to be easier right now, we want to be playing our worst basketball - that's what Coquese has said. So in March and January when we start playing conference play, we'll be ready.“

Game time on Sunday at the Bryce Jordan Center is set for noon.
