High Fiber/Food Poisoning LInk

Does fiber promote e.coli infections?
Health experts say eating a high fiber diet can reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes. But new research suggests it can also have put you in danger of a serious illness.

A new study shows that eating a diet high in fiber may make you more likely to develop severe food poisoning. Scientists found that high fiber diets increased the risk of toxins produced by e. coli,  binding to the colon.

That led to more bacteria in the colon, more weight loss and greater death rates in mice fed the high fiber diet.

However, the study author still says high fiber diets are good for you, but make sure the fresh produce you eat isn't contaminated.

The National Institutes of Health paid for the study.
