Giving Up The Car Keys

When is the right time for elderly drivers?
ALTOONA - When is the right time for a senior citizen to give up the car keys? It is a difficult conversation for people to have with elderly drivers.

Two elderly drivers were killed in crashes so far this week, and while it's not clear whether or not a medical condition played a role in either crash, experts say now is the time to keep an eye out for warning signs.

The winter season is more dangerous for elderly drivers as weather starts to turn.

There is no law in Pennsylvania that requires senior citizens to get their driving skills tested, but experts recommend anyone 55 years or older take a safe driving course.

"Often the family or caregivers do notice some signs of perhaps some confusions, poor vision, where they start to try to limit their trips to shorter trips, day time trips maybe not driving in bad weather," State Farm Insurance Agent Tammy Kehr says.
