First Responders Prepare For The Worst

85 first responders take part in simulation of train derailment.
FREEDOM TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY - More than 85 first responders from Blair County took part in a disaster response, train derailment simulation on Saturday.

In 2010 a similar simulation took place, and Blair County Emergency Director Dan Boyles said that simulation prepared many departments for Hurricane Sandy.

"We didn't have to call the first responders to get information," Boyles said. "They were calling us with damage assessments."

This particular disaster response simulation involved containing a hazardous waste leak following a train derailment.

"It's the closest thing you can get to a real life incident," said John Casey, a manager with Norfolk Southern. "You can work through it, without having a real life incident take place."
