JOHNSTOWN, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- Johnstown City Firefighters every year put their own money together to give a family in need a Christmas.
“We raised a thousand dollars this year,” said Captain Jason Novack. “This is the most we have ever raised.”
Buying Christmas gifts for a family in need has become a tradition for these firefighters. It’s something Novack said they look forward to.
“It brings us together,” said Novack. “We are helping a family right here in our community.”
Novack said they work with Professional Family Care Services to find a family but they don’t just help any family.
“We try to help a family that is down on their luck but working to get back on their feet.”
This years deserving family has six kids, ages eight months to 16 years old. The firefighters will deliver the gifts that they went shopping for and wrapped on Christmas Eve.
“This is what Christmas is all about,” said Novack.
Since the department had two donations they also decided to go to Wal-Mart on Sunday and give two random families money.
‘We stood at the checkout line and noticed two different people who seemed to be struggling so we gave them a hand.”
The firefighters own families join in on the shopping experience to help buy the gifts.
