Duke LifePoint is a joint venture of Duke University Medical and LifePoint Hospitals.

Duke LifePoint Healthcare is a joint venture of Duke University Health System and LifePoint Hospitals, a hospital management company, with 61 hospitals.

Together, Duke LifePoint  has five hospitals---three in North Carolina, one in Virginia, and one in Michigan. The company prefers to take on  regional medical centers and community hospitals, that are sole providers in a community.

They promise  to enhance services, recruit and retain physicians, and develop new service lines at hospitals looking to become part of a stable well-funded system.

Speaking about Conemaugh, LifePoint Hospitals President and C.E.O. William Campbell said, "we will invest captial over the next ten years that will allow this system to grow and to insure that it is here to care for the people in this region  for many, many years to come."

Duke LifePoint and Conemaugh will now negotiate the terms of a definitive agreement and if the state approves it, the acquisition is expected to be completed in the fall.

Conemaugh will be the largest health care system in Duke LifePoint's network and the only one in Pennsylvania.
