Washington, DC ( - Minnesota Vikings defensive end Spencer Nealy will have the start of his 2014 season cut short.

"Spencer Nealy of the Minnesota Vikings has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2014 regular season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances," a statement from the league read on Friday. "Nealy will be eligible to return to the Vikings' active roster on Monday, September 29 following the team's September 28 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Nealy is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games."

Nealy is a native of San Antonio and second-year pro out of Texas A&M who was signed as an undrafted free agent by Minnesota. He spent six of the final seven weeks of last season on the club's practice squad.

"Recently I learned from the NFL that I tested positive for a stimulant that is banned under the NFL policy. I worked with my agent and the union to investigate the test results, and I learned that a supplement I took contained a banned stimulant," Nealy related in a statement issued on his behalf by the NFLPA on Friday.

"I understand that the NFL policy is very strict, and I take responsibility. I'm very sorry for the impact of this situation on my teammates, the Vikings organization and Vikings fans. I will work extremely hard during training camp, and during the suspension, I will stay in top shape and will be ready to contribute upon my return."
