Vandals Target Basketball Court Lights

Vandals broke coin operated light switch box.
DECATUR TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY -- The basketball court in Fairview Park has lights you can pay for to play in the dark. But Decautur Township Police say between Thursday and Friday someone vandalized the light switch and power cabinet, hurting the community and people who play here.

Alexis Hynd is on her high school basketball team and visits the courts to hang out with friends.

“When there's nothing to do during the days me and my friends will come up and play and sometimes we have basketball practice up here,” said Alexis Hynd.

Renae Kelly of Osceola Mills said, “We were actually excited when they put in the basketball courts due to the fact that now the older kids actually have somewhere to go do something.”

Now Alexis can't do that in the evening because vandals broke the coin operated light box.

“Well it kind of shocked me because I didn't think anyone would do that because like lots of people use it,” said Hynd.

“It really isn’t fair to do that to us because they put a lot of hard work into this for us up here,” said Terra Kelly, a friend of Hynd.

“We drive by and that and there are a lot of kids that are actually here at nighttime,” said Renae Kelly.

She says it hurts the small community in a big way.

“In Osceola there's not a whole lot for the teenagers to actually do you know so it is sad cause we have nothing,” said Renae Kelly.

Now there's a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Hynd said, “I hope they find him like really soon because it would make everyone else feel a lot better.”

“The teenagers don’t have anything around to actually do,” said Renae Kelly. “This park is really the only thing for all of the kids.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Decatur Township Police at 814-339-677
