USS Somerset Departs for Philadelphia

The ship will be commissioned in early March.
AVONDALE, LOUISIANA – The Navy’s newest ship, named in honor of the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93, has set sail for Philadelphia ahead of its commissioning ceremony.

The USS Somerset departed Huntington Ingalls Industries Shipbuilding in Avondale, Louisiana February 3rd. The ship will be commissioned in Philadelphia March 1st. Following its commissioning the Somerset will travel to its home port in San Diego, California.

The Somerset is the third of three named in honor of the victims and first responders of the September 11th attacks.

USS Somerset is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock. It is the ninth of 11 planned for the class. The next San Antonio-class ship will be the USS John P. Murtha, and is scheduled for delivery in 2015.
