USS Somerset Commissioning This Weekend

Several bus loads of passengers from Somerset County will travel to the ceremony Saturday.
PHILADELPHIA, PHILADELPHIA COUNTY – The Navy’s newest ship, named in honor of Somerset County, will be commissioned Saturday in Philadelphia.

The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock will officially join the fleet with a commissioning ceremony at Penn’s Landing.

U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D – PA) calls the naming of the ship a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made on September 11, 2001.

“It’s also great that the vessel is being named after Somerset County so it is a real tribute to the county and certainly the folks in Shanksville both the heroes themselves gave their lives that day but also all those in the region,” said Senator Casey.

Several bus loads of passengers from Somerset County are expected to travel to the Philadelphia area for the commissioning of the ship which will serve as a permanent tribute to those on United Flight 93.

After the commissioning, the Somerset will travel to its home port of San Diego.
