UPMC/Highmark Reach Agreement

Pact should relieve area residents worried about care.

HARRISBURG - A consent decree reached by UPMC and Highmark should help resolve worries about access to medical care by folks in our region.
Governor Tom Corbett, Attorney General Kathleen Kane and other state officials who worked on the agreement, unveiled details Friday. It outlines care for patients, affected by the bitter dispute between  Highmark and UPMC

UPMC refused to sign a new contract with Highmark Insurance, after Highmark bought UPMC rival, Allegheny General Hospital. That means most Highmark customers in the Pittsburgh area must pay higher out-of- network costs for UPMC doctors and facilities.
The new agreement doesn't change that, but it will guarantee access to care at  all UPMC facilities for Highmark patients from  UPMC Altoona, UPMC Bedford, and other UPMC community hospitals.
