Town Hopes Microdistillery Will Bring Economic Boost

BELLEFONTE, CENTRE COUNTY - A local town is looking for a big economic boost and they're hoping a new microdistillery may be the ticket.

Kevin Lloyd's dream to open this microdistillery in Bellefonte is finally becoming a reality. Crews have been working for months to get Big Spring Spirits ready for its opening day.

"We had new friends from Bellefonte that welcomed us to the community," Lloyd said. "People that we've worked with in Bellefonte as well as people from State College."

Big Spring Spirits opened last weekend. Lloyd said the turnout was impressive, with about 300 people. He's hoping that's a good indicator for the microdistillery's official grand opening in a couple of weeks.

"We expect this will be a new anchor for the community's new venues, something different for the entire area that they're not used to," he said. "A focal point for the community."

The microdistillery is the only one of its kind in Central Pennsylvania and they've got a lot to offer. From vodka to bourbon and whiskey, they'll make their own seltzer and soda, too.

Borough Manager Ralph Stewart is pleased.

"I was there, stopped in to see how they were doing," he said. "Everything is very nice, beautiful."

Like Lloyd, Stewart is hoping this business will bring a big boost to the local economy.

"The owner deliberately is using a lot of local products, so we think it will be a destination here in Bellefonte," Stewart said. "We're trying to revitalize our downtown and the Waterfront area, so this will be a key part of all of those efforts."

Big Spring Spirits
will hold its grand opening August 9th from 2-7 P.M.
