Are computers good therapy? Homewood at Martinsburg shows how technology is making a difference for people who live there!
In this segment, we visit Homewood at Martinsburg to talk to Director of Therapeutic Recreation Brad Norris. Norris demonstrates a new computer system being used at Homewood, the IN2L.
"It stands for 'It's never too late," said Norris.
He saw it at a convention and decided to bring one to Homewood at Martinsburg to see how residents would react.
"The two things about it that really got my attention initially... one... it has skype capabilities. We can have residents stay in touch with their families and loved ones," he explained.
Norris also liked the idea of setting up personal accounts for each resident.
"We can also load it with their favorite things. So, if they like music from the '40's, we can load music from the '40's into their personal account."
Norris says different apps on the computer are dedicated to problem solving and decision making, which keep the brain active. Others are more sensory or physical.
