State Police release Memorial Day weekend crash statistics

State Police issued nearly 13,000 speeding citations over the holiday weekend.
HARRISBURG – State Police announced Wednesday they investigated more than 700 crashes during the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The 709 crashes do not include crashes investigated by local police resulted in five deaths and 277 injuries.

The official holiday period was May 23 through May 26. Troopers cited 1,570 individuals for not wearing seat belts and 250 motorists were cited for not securing children in safety seats.

Nearly 13,000 speeding citations were issued and 485 were arrested for driving under the influence. Of the 709 crashed investigated by State Police, 57 of those crashes, including two of the fatal crashes, were alcohol related.

The numbers are mixed compared to Memorial Day 2013. In 2013, State Police responded to 754 crashes, in which 11 people died and 242 others were injured.
