Staff Sergeant to Receive Medal of Honor

The soldier becomes the fifth living Medal of Honor recipient for duty during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Obama held a special ceremony Monday to award the Medal of Honor to Staff Sergeant Ty Carter for his actions in Afghanistan in 2009.

Carter was at Combat Outpost Keating in Eastern Afghanistan when the outpost came under attack by more than 300 Taliban insurgents in October 2009. Eight U.S. servicemen were killed in the battle and American forces were forced to withdraw from the valley.

Clint Romesha also received the Medal of Honor for his actions in the same battle. Carter is the fifth living Medal of Honor recipient for duty during battles in Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to Stars and Stripes, it is the first time since 1963 two living service members have been awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions in the same battle.
