Spikes Win Again

State College gets 10th win in last 11 games.

STATE COLLEGE – Will Anderson produced another strong start on the mound, and Rowan Wick increased his New York-Penn League-leading RBI total to 32 over the first 29 games of the year as the State College Spikes topped the Staten Island Yankees, 6-3, on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for their 10th victory in the last 11 games.

Anderson (3-1) won his third straight start after allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander from Cal State-Monterey Bay struck out three batters on the night as well. Anderson’s walk, which was given to Staten Island (15-14) leadoff batter Collin Slaybaugh in the first inning, was his first in 15 innings of work since June 24.

Wick doubled home the first of two State College (21-8) runs in the fifth inning, and went 2-for-4 to bring his average to .389 on the year. The North Vancouver, BC native still leads the NYPL with 12 homers as well.

The Spikes responded to the Yankees’ first-inning run with three of their own in the first, and never trailed the rest of the way. Jake Stone knocked in a pair of runs via groundout for his 11th and 12thruns batted in since July 2. Danny Diekroeger and Brian O’Keefe also produced RBI singles for State College.

Nick Lomascolo relieved Anderson in the sixth and retired all seven batters he faced over 2 1/3 innings, including two by strikeout. Anderson Gerdel (1) allowed two hits and struck out one during a scoreless ninth inning to grab the save.

Darren Seferina and Robelys Reyes both went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Reyes added a stolen base on the night for State College.
