Spikes Sweep ValleyCats

Wiley drives in 3 in his Spikes debut.
STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - Brett Wiley knocked in three runs in his first game with the State College Spikes and Kevin Herget notched his league-leading fifth win of the year as the Spikes finished a three-game sweep of the Tri-City ValleyCats with a 4-1 victory on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

State College (24-19) has now won four games in a row and six straight at home. The Spikes are 13-2 in their last 15 home games, and hold the New York-Penn League’s best home record at 16-6.

Wiley, who joined the Spikes on Wednesday after being called up from the Cardinals’ Rookie-level affiliate in Johnson City, delivered a two-run triple in the fifth inning that gave State College its first lead of the game and made it 3-1. The 2012 13th-round draft choice then followed with an RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Spikes an insurance run.

Herget (5-0) earned the win after going 5 2/3 innings and yielding one run on four hits and a hit batsman while striking out four. The only run Herget allowed came after Tony Kemp’s leadoff triple for Tri-City (26-19) and a subsequent RBI groundout by Jack Mayfield in the first inning. The Kean University product is the first Spikes pitcher to start a season 5-0 since Tony Watson went 6-0 to begin 2007.

Luis Perez collected the other RBI for State College and scored a pair of runs as part of a 2-for-3 night.

Jacob Booden (1) picked up the save with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out two.

ValleyCats starter Tanner Bushue (3-2) sailed through the first four innings as he gave up just one hit and faced the minimum number of batters. However, Bushue took the loss after allowing all three of the Spikes’ fifth-inning runs. The right-hander gave up a total of three hits, a walk and a hit batsman while recording two strikeouts. The loss was Tri-City’s seventh in a row.

Friday, the Spikes begin the second half of a six-game homestand with a 7:05 p.m. matchup to open a three-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters (Oakland Athletics). Right-hander Arturo Reyes (0-1) will get the ball for State College, while left-hander Brent Powers (4-1) is set to start for Vermont.
