Spikes Fall Short Against Muckdogs

Despite an early 2-run home run, State College falls to Batavia, 7-3 on Wednesday night.
STATE COLLEGE, PA – Jake Stone delivered his first home run of the season, but miscues cost the State College Spikes as they took their first home defeat of the year in a 7-3 loss to the Batavia Muckdogs on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Stone’s two-run homer off the center field batter’s eye in the first inning gave the Spikes (4-2) the early advantage. However, State College committed four errors on the night, including three in a five-run Batavia (4-2) third inning that opened the door for the Muckdogs

Spikes starter Will Anderson (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season, although only one of the six runs he allowed over five innings was earned. Anderson yielded a total of seven hits and struck out four batters on the night.

Robelys Reyes and Rowan Wick both produced multiple hits for State College, along with Stone. Brian O’Keefe drove in the other Spikes run with an RBI groundout in the fourth.

Batavia’s Andy Beltre (1-0) started on the mound and went five innings to earn the win. Beltre gave up three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five.

The Spikes threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, putting the tying run on deck with two outs each time. However, Muckdogs reliever Tyler Kane (2) shut the door on both occasions by getting the third out. Kane earned the save with his 2 1/3 scoreless frames, yielding one hit and one hit batsman while striking out three.

Only two of Batavia’s seven runs scored via a base hit, both on Carlos Duran’s single in the third. Aaron Blanton drove in three runs for the Muckdogs without the benefit of a hit. Eric Fisher and Ryan Aper each recorded a pair of hits to aid the Batavia offense.

The loss puts the Spikes back into a tie for the New York-Penn League’s Pinckney Division lead with the Muckdogs. The two clubs will meet again Thursday to complete their three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with a 7:05 p.m. matchup.

State College will send left-hander Dewin Perez (1-0) to the mound for his second start of the year after he tossed five shutout innings on Opening Night in Williamsport. Batavia will go with right-hander Jose Adames (0-0).
