Some PSU Classes May Be Cancelled Thursday

Penn State University is allowing teachers to use their own discretion about whether to cancel classes Thursday during the Joe Paterno memorial.
STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY -- A memorial service for Joe Paterno is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's University Park campus. Although Penn State classes are not officially canceled, Provost Rob Pangborn asks faculty to use their discretion in holding or rescheduling classes, recognizing the needs of students who wish to pay their respects by attending this ticketed event in person or by viewing it on television.

University Faculty Senate policy on class attendance fittingly affirms that students may opt to miss a class meeting due to unavoidable circumstances such as family emergency or religious observance. The memorial service is well within the intent of these provisions. For many students, the memorial will provide a positive opportunity to express grief and reinforce their understanding that they are members of a caring community.

Whenever possible, individuals planning to miss class should facilitate the process by contacting their instructors via email or other methods as soon as possible. Instructors should notify students if they decide to cancel or reschedule class, taking into account the course and/or work conflicts that some students may face. Rescheduling decisions will need to be made on a case-by-case basis.
