Sex Education for Intellectually Disabled

Local organization tackles a tough subject.

ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - A local organization for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is tackling what's almost been a forbidden topic  --sexual behavior.

The ARC of Blair County joined Wednesday with area agencies to host a training session on promoting healthy relationships and preventing  inappropriate behavior.

As part of the effort, a curriculum on sexual education is being developed for school age children and teens, as well as one for adults.

ARC Executive Director Maria Brandt says. "the phone calls we're now receiving, are from parents whose children are about to enter the criminal justice system because of acts they did not know were criminal in nature."

Brandt says a psychologist specializing in treating intellectual disabilities is writing a curriculum for the sexual education program and it will be reviwed by Altoona Area School District's Special Education Department and Blair County's Human Services Department.
It's expected to be introduced next year and she hopes it'll eventually expand county-wide.
