Scammers Using Jury Duty to Steal Information

The scammers ask residents to confirm their personal information.
RIDGWAY, ELK COUNTY – State Police have been made aware of individuals claiming to be court employees in an effort to get personal information.

According to police, the scammers have been telling citizens they have been selected for jury duty, or have not reported. They then move to verify names and security numbers before asking for credit card numbers. The scammers often threaten the citizens with fines if they refuse to give out information.

The judicial system does not contact people by telephone and ask for personal information. If you receive one of these calls, do not give out any personal information and hang up.

If you have been contacted by these scammers and have given out personal information, police advise you monitor your account statements and credit reports, and contact your local police department.
