Roommates Power Surging Spikes

State College's Rowan Wick and Alex De Leon smacking ball through first two weeks.
STATE COLLEGE - Some call them “The Bash Brothers,” others prefer “Shake and Bake.”

No matter the nickname, the Spikes’ Rowan Wick and Alex De Leon are the two top sluggers in the New York-Penn League.

“It's good to feed off it,” De Leon says of the pair’s connection. “Especially when you have another person in the lineup that's driving in runs.“

When Wick and De Leon are at the plate, you never know how far the ball will go.

Their 13 combined homers are more than any other team's entire roster in the league.

Wick calls the start his hottest streak ever.

“I've definitely hit the ball well before, but not this well,” says Wick, who leads the NYPL in average, home runs, and on-base-plus-slugging. “I mean nine home runs in 14 games. It's been a long time coming, I guess. I've just gotta keep rolling with it.”

“The ball really jumps off his bat when he squares it up,” De Leon says of Wick, who bats behind him in the order. “I mean, you can tell.”

So what's behind the roommates' blazing two weeks?

One theory is a diet heavy in eggs.

More likely is the credit the pair gives to hitting coach Ramon Ortiz and a deep Spikes line-up.

“They have to pitch to you,” De Leon says. “They don't really have a choice. They have to throw you a fastball or a pitch up in the zone that you can put a good swing on.”
