Penguins name Mike Johnston new coach

Johnston worked as an assistant in Los Angeles and Vancouver before taking a coaching job with the Portland Winterhawks in 2009.
PITTSBURGH – The Penguins named Mike Johnston of the Portland Winterhawks as the team’s new head coach at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Johnston has been coach and general manager of the WHL team since 2009. Prior to his work in Portland he was an assistant coach in Los Angeles and Vancouver.

New Penguins GM Jim Rutherford previously said the team had lost out on their first attempt to hire a coach. Dan Bylsma, the Pens previous head coach, was fired June 6th.
