FERNDALE, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- A state fire marshal is investigating what started a house fire that destroyed one home and damaged two others.

"We watched it all burning - watching the flames licking the house ya know, nothing you could do about it," said Diana Pavlick who lives next door.

The fire started a little after seven Monday night at a home along Suter Street in Ferndale Borough.  It didn’t take long for the fire to quickly spread and heavy smoke to fill the air.

"We started smelling this funny smoke-not like regular grill or something then the next thing was you heard a pop and then little pops and then all of the sudden flames," said Pavlick.

The one home was fully involved by the time firefighters.

"This was one of the few ones that have gone that fast that quick -normally it doesn't happen that way," said Don Blasko, Fire Chief, West Hills Regional.

One home was destroyed; two neighboring homes also were damaged from the intense heat and flames.

"To have three houses damaged, the heat that we were dealing with and humidity yesterday it was all a disadvantage to us,” said Blasko.  “But the guys that came to the alarm assignment there they were unbelievable everyone worked together."

'I commend those volunteers,” said Pavlick.  “They did a great job here there were so many of them and they did a good job- they saved our house."

The Red Cross was called in to help out the families.
