New Treatment for Kids with Diabetes

Researchers testing bionic pancreas.
Researchers in Massachusetts are testing a bionic pancreas for the first time in children under 11-years-old. For the past few weeks, diabetic children have attended a summer camp ‎to test a revolutionary device that controls blood sugar.

The bionic pancreas uses a smartphone hardwired to a continuous glucose monitor and two pumps, to deliver doses of insulin or the hormone glucagon every five minutes. Researchers say it's already been successfully tested in adults and teens  with type one diabetes.

Final testing will be done in the next few years before it's submitted for FDA approval in 2017.
