New Effort to Settle UPMC/Highmark Dispute

Governor announces Patients First team.

HARRISBURG - There's a new effort to resolve the dispute that could affect the healthcare of thousands of Pennsylvanians, including many in our region. Governor Tom Corbett announced, on Monday, that he's formed a Patients First leadership team.

It's been created to focus on the stand-off between the Pennsylvania's largest health insurer, Highmark, and one of its largest health systems, UPMC. The contract between the two  expires, at the end of the year, leaving many Highmark customers worried they won't be able to use UPMC doctors and facilities.

The governor's appointed the state health and state insurance secretaries to the panel To facilitate discussions to resolve the issues.  He's also asked the state attorney general to join the effort

Corbett added that, "the leadership team will immediately begin meeting with senior management from both UPMC and Highmark this week. I also expect to meet personally in the near future with the boards of both companies to communicate our goals. "
