New Businesses Bringing Big Boost to Centre County

STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - New businesses are popping up in Centre County and locals are hoping they will bring a shot in the arm to the local economy.

Quaker Steak & Lube is celebrating a grand opening Wednesday. Business owners there say besides adding new jobs to the area, they're hoping to bring more people and business to State College.

It's a business back again, in a big way.

"There was a large crying by the community of younger individuals who said can you please bring the Quaker Steak & Lube, by label, back to State College, so here we are," Co-owner, Jeff Druzak, said.

Quaker Steak & Lube opened their doors Wednesday after filing for bankruptcy in 2008. Druzak calls the come back sweet.

"It's my first restaurant and I chose State College to be the place for me," he said. "We're excited about being back in State College and bringing a lot of jobs and employment in the community."

The Lube is adding lots of jobs.

"We're employing over 170 people right now, sot hat's a great impact for the community." General Manager, Craig Brennan said. "We've been able to put a lot of people to work."

They're not the only ones. Several other businesses, including Ulta and Trader Joe's, make State College's unemployment rate the lowest among metropolitan areas in the state, at six percent for August.

Joe Gill is glad to see more businesses coming to the area.

"I'm glad to have a Steak & Lube here," Gill said. "We've got a Harley Davidson and we like to come on bike night, so we're looking forward to it."

Something Brennan hopes will spread to others in the community.

"Being right in the middle of State College and Bellefonte, we thought it was the perfect location and of course with the Nittany Mall right across the street, we're getting a lot of exposure," he said.
