It's been a tough, cold and snowy winter, and for many people,it included a few bouts with the sniffles, and a cough. If you're looking for relief, instead of running to the medicine cabinet for a remedy, you may want to turn to the kitchen cupboard for something grandma or great-grandma might have recommended.
Barb Denham is a nurse practitioner offers some tips from the National Honey Board. "Honey is a natural cough suppressant," she says." Research has shown that just a few spoonfuls of honey is just as effective as over-the-counter cough remedies."
Nurse Barb says you can make honey cough syrup with honey, lemon, ginger and water, for adults and children over one year old. Younger children should not have honey for safety reasons.
