Memorial Service Held for Local War Hero

Gerald Russell served in the Marine Corps for 30 years before working at Penn State.
STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY – A memorial service was held Thursday to honor retired Marine Colonel Gerald Russell.

The service was held at the Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church. Russell died Monday at age 97. Before becoming an associate dean at Penn State, Russell served 30 years in the Marine Corps.

“I think he's going to be remembered by his leadership his duty to his country his devotion to his family,” said family spokesperson Brent Pasquinelli. “He was a man of great faith and i think he's going to be remembered as someone who never stopped."

Russell was one of the highest-decorated Marines in World War II. He was awarded more than 15 medals for his service.
