Measuring Snow in Winter Storm

Meteorologist Steve Newton explains how snow totals could drop once snow changes to sleet and freezing rain.
ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY – With the latest round of winter weather moving through the region, many are dealing with a quick hit of snow followed by sleet and freezing rain.

For those wanting to measure the snow totals, keep in mind your result may be lower than actual once sleet begins to fall. Sleet will compact the snow and freezing rain will give a glaze of ice.

The best results will be seen if you measured snow in an open area (away from trees and buildings) and on a flat surface like a patio table or deck.
