Local Store Closing After 74 Years

A small business in Centre County is closing its doors after a long run in the area.
STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - A small business in Centre County is closing its doors after a long run in the area.

Mr. Charles will close May 31. After 74 years in State College, the owner said it's time to move on.

"It's just an evolution, the right thing to do at this point in my life," owner of Mr. Charles, Charlene Rosen, said.

Rosen has called Mr. Charles home her whole life.

"My parents started the store in 1940 and I've been running it for the past 25 years," she said.

Rosen lives in New York City and travels to State College often to check on the store. She said the decision to close is hard for her, but something she needs to do after seeing a downturn in business.

"I think since the Sandusky problem, it has never been the same," she said. "Football season and regular, I think things are very different."

"I think it's effected a lot of different businesses and the whole community in a lot of different ways," Scott Woods, President of West Arete, said.

Woods owns a small business downtown, building web and mobile applications. He hasn't seen much of an effect from the Sandusky scandal in his line of work, but has seen a change in another way.

"We've seen a shift in everybody's attitude," he said. "One toward more thinking of positive things that we can be doing as a community. I think people are trying to make the most of it."

David Gibbons agrees and thinks as one door closes, others will open.

"Things have really kind of caught on," Gibbons, President of Cloud My Office, said. "We're seeing a lot more collaboration between small business leaders in the area and Penn State. There are some really interesting ideas coming out of Start-up Week. We're very, very excited for the future here."

Hundreds of students are participating in Start-up Week at Penn State. There are several events open to the public this week, including a seminar Tuesday for anyone interested in learning how to start up your own small business.
