Local School District Grieving Loss of Student

PENNS VALLEY, CENTRE COUNTY - A local school district is dealing with the loss of a student Monday.

18 year-old Logan Bonar died Friday night, after crashing his car in Potter Township, Centre County.

Bonar was a senior at Penns Valley Area High School. The superintendent of the school district says the high school is eerily quiet Monday as students mourn the loss of Bonar.

Bonar was a member of both the football and track teams at the high school.

Superintendent Brian Griffith says multiple school counselors have been available all day for students. The district also brought in professional counselors from outside agencies, like Tides, to speak with students, as well as local pastors.

Griffith says the senior class will also hold meetings this week to discuss ways to remember Bonar. There is talk to memorialize him in a memorial garden at the school.

"We encourage parents to talk with their children as reactions to this news will vary. Our teachers will be ready to identify signs that students are struggling and refer these students to our counselors," Griffith said. "We ask parents to encourage their child to visit with our counseling staff if they have concerns."

Police say Bonar was speeding and lost control of his car on a patch of ice around 10:00 Friday night. His car crashed into a tree and flew into a ditch in the 600 block of Old Fort Road. State Police say he was not wearing a seat belt.

Bonar's funeral will be held Thursday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Centre Hall.
