Local Man Competes In International Competition

Luke Espe and his team will compete against some of the best athletes in the world and he said he has dad to thank.
CAMBRIA TOWNSHIP, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- Luke Espe and his team will compete against some of the best athletes in the world and he said he has dad to thank.

"We're pretty beat up,” said Espe.  “The hardest thing I think is the mental aspect of it though- for the past 10 months to a year it's 2 workouts a day everyday."

Espe is one of 48 teams from around the world who qualified to compete at the International CrossFit Games July 25th in California.

"We're at the big dance now there's no qualifying for next step,” said Espe.  ‘I was more nervous for regional to qualify for this step.”

Espe was born and raised in Cambria Township.  He said everything he learned to get him to this competition came from his dad.

‘He took a huge passion in our growing up… always pushing us,” said Espe.

Many know Luke’s dad as Dr. Scott Espe, a chiropractor in Mundy’s corner.  He began working out with his kids when they were in the early teens.  Luke was 12 when he first hit the gym with his dad.

"I think it's important to be apart of your kids childhood youth and growing in positive's ways,' said Dr. Scott Espe.

To encourage his kids Espe put up signs in his gym to motivate them.

"Go after your dreams whatever they are," said Espe.  “You can be anything you want.”

Espe said he can’t wait to watch Luke compete against some of the best athletes in the world.

“I couldn’t be more proud,”

The 27-year old said he is ready to take on the world’s best CrossFit athletes, and he said he has his dad to thank.

“He always said no limits, I would have to tell him thank you – he’s 100% the reason I am here today,” said Espe.
